Humans are always intrigued by survival stories because survival instincts are an inherent part of every human being. People don't even know that they have strong survival instincts until they get involved in a dire situation. The fascination with survival and the inherent intensity of the do-or-die nature of survival stories is the reason for the popularity of the survival game genre. In recent times, an uptick has been seen in survival games that adopt a battle royale format with players looking to survive by whichever means possible. The idea is that the players need to survive until they become the last player standing. Rules of Survival is a survival game based on the same model with the idea to compete against 119 other players on a map with the player surviving until the end taking away the bulk of the spoils.

Rules of Survival has a very straightforward app layout and this is where it does a good job. Often such large and complex games come up with a very difficult start screen where it would take you a lot of time just to launch the actual game. It is easier to do with Rules of Survival as you can easily choose whether you want to go an individual battle, duo battle or a team battle. In individual battle, all the 120 players are on their own and need to survive however possible. In duo and team battles, you combine with other online players in order to survive as a duo or a team. Co-ordination is the key in such battles and often provides extremely funny and entertaining gaming sessions.

The most important aspect of survival games is the gameplay itself. The gameplay of Rules of Survival has a good overall structure. When the game is launched and a new battle royale is started, the game waits to connect 120 players to the session. You are provided around a minute to shadow practice running, fighting and shooting before you are flown across to the landing site. After you have landed, the actual game begins.

The game doesn't help much in terms of directions and in terms of giving an idea of where the other players are. You have to do everything on your own from finding ammunition and guns to getting health packs and armor while you also have to be on the lookout for enemies from all directions too. In order to ensure that players don't keep sitting around and hiding, the map shrinks after every five minutes and if you stay in any such area after those five minutes, you are likely to get killed by random bombs going off. Whenever you kill an opponent, you gain points and also earn all the spoils of the downed opponent which ensures that you are always on the lookout for kills as it can help improve your position greatly.

The problem with Rules of Survival is twofold though. Firstly, the gameplay has a lot of glitches and can freeze at the most inopportune moments. Sometimes, it will get stuck when you are picking up the spoils of your opponent while sometimes it would hang right when you are being attacked. Secondly, the controls are difficult and managing them all on a small screen is difficult. The segregation of controls looks good as you get all the navigation options on the left of the screen and shooting options on the right. However, using health packs, switching between guns and reloading bullets all have their own buttons too and this is when it gets too much. In high stakes battles, taking the time to find the right button on the screen can prove deadly. Decreasing the number of controls can improve the user experience greatly.
